Antennas

   For long range fpv flying, a  patch antenna or yagi or circular tube antenna is essential. These antenna require guidance (manual or automatic) and to point at the  aircraft - typically between 14 to 35 degrees horizontal for maximum  signal gain.  This maintains a high S:N or Signal to Noise Ratio, below  that threshold signal garbage is the result.

Additional Notes:  Factory shipped equipment - by definition means NEW, not tested, not configured, not calibrated. To measure is to know.

So, with an Oscilloscope and a plastic screwdriver set and basic tools, a copy of the specifications and assorted technical .pdf files along with adequate test electronics knowledge or a willingness to learn --- YOU can improve the hardware.  HOWEVER, you are on your own in terms of risk here. 

Optical Testing & Calibration: For video display and ranging, a bench measurement of angles to size can be made, then transferred to image  display on the receiver with a single chip OSD from an electronics vendor.

Once field ready, one should consult Aviation Sectional Charts, NOTAMS or notice to airman informs pilots of aircraft that activity may affect their flying so they should be on the lookout for it; and Weather Reports and carry insurance to cover accidents. Know your airspace.
