Vacuum Tank and pump for Composites Work

Initial construction of vacuum system from local hardware stores and HVAC suppliers.  This one stage vacuum pump can pull 28.5 inches of Mercury (Hg) vacuum which is more than sufficient for occasional use.  White filter is high volume particulate air filter. On tank, the rectangle silver digital gage shows temperature and humidity - mounted with magnets.  Above tank, round white analog gage shows vacuum in tank and hose prior to use with composites mold.  Top left, the black box holds relay and electronic vacuum sensor and controller. This system is suitable for fiberglass and carbon fiber work.

Tank was originally a pressure tank for vehicle tires. After removing the manifold, a brass bushing replaced the manifold connecting to the steel tank.  This 7 gallon tank is almost a cubic foot in volume.  About 10 minutes of vacuum pump operation are necessary to extract air from this tank prior to composite vacuum bagging of the mold.
